Inverness - The Capital of the Highlands
Inverness is a fast-growing city in the Highlands of Scotland, and is situated at the mouth of the River Ness. Having gained city status in December 2000, Inverness has become an important centre for retail, administration, transport and tourism. It is served by a train station, bus station and nearby airport and has many attractions to suit visitors of all ages.
The attractions in Inverness include the Aquadome swimming pool and leisure centre, a bowling alley, multi-screen Vue cinema, a museum, numerous parks and walking areas, and the Eastgate shopping centre which houses over 60 quality shops and a food court. Inverness also benefits from a Victorian market and many other unique shops to find the perfect gift or souvenir. There is no shortage of quality eating places in Inverness, with something to cater for every taste.
As well as the plentiful modern attractions, Inverness also has a strong historical significance. No visit to Inverness would be complete without visiting Culloden battlefield, the site of the last Jacobite conflict in 1746 which is situated just a few miles east of the city. Loch Ness is another must-see, and of course its world-famous monster Nessie! The remains of Urquhart Castle are situated on the banks of the loch and make for an interesting, historical day out.
